Frequently asked questions about vision correction (FAQ)
What is the age limit for laser eye surgery (Aqua PRK)?
To undergo laser eye surgery such as Aqua PRK, you must be at least 18 years old, but we often recommend that you are 20–21 years old. The reason is that the eye and visual strength continue to develop and change during the teenage years. To ensure an accurate and long-lasting result, your vision (your prescription) must have been completely stable for at least two years before surgery.
What is the difference between Aqua PRK and RLE (lens replacement)?
The difference primarily lies in your age-related visual development and which part of the eye is treated:
Aqua PRK (laser): Best suited for people under 45 years of age. Here, an advanced laser is used to gently reshape the surface of the cornea so that vision errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism are corrected.
RLE (lens replacement): Best suited for people over 45 years of age. Here, the eye’s natural lens is replaced with a new, high-tech multifocal lens. This removes the need for reading glasses and also corrects existing vision errors.
Why can’t I have surgery if I do not wear glasses or contact lenses?
Both laser treatments and lens replacement procedures are surgical interventions aimed at correcting an existing vision defect. If you have perfect vision in your daily life without the use of glasses or contact lenses, then medically speaking there is no vision error to correct surgically.
Can I have surgery if I have astigmatism?
Yes, absolutely. Both Aqua PRK and RLE are highly effective at correcting astigmatism. During a pre-examination at the clinic, we map your eyes precisely so we can tailor the treatment specifically to your astigmatism.
How reliable is the online test?
Our online screening is purely indicative and based on general criteria such as age and need for glasses. It cannot replace a proper examination. If the test marks you as “suitable,” the next step is always a thorough pre-examination with us, where we carefully examine your eyes.
