What are skin bags under the eyes?
Under-eye bags are a condition where the skin and fatty tissue beneath the eyes begin to swell, which can create a tired or aged appearance. They can develop due to aging, as the skin loses elasticity, or as a result of fluid retention, genetic factors, or lifestyle factors such as stress and poor sleep. Under-eye bags are generally harmless but can cause cosmetic concerns and, in some cases, vision problems.
How is an eyelid surgery performed?
Before the surgery
Preparation for surgery is important to ensure a good outcome:
- Smoking: Smoking can cause complications such as infection and tissue death, so it is important to stop smoking at least 4 weeks before surgery and wait to start again until 4 weeks after surgery.
- Medication: Some medications can affect the surgery, especially those that can cause bleeding problems. During the preliminary examination, you will talk to the specialist about how to manage any medications you are taking.
The course of the operation
- Anesthesia: The surgery is performed under local anesthesia, which means you will be awake but without pain. The anesthesia makes you feel that something is happening, but you will not feel pain.
- Procedure: During surgery, the excess skin and underlying fat are removed. If necessary, the plastic surgeon will also remove fat deposits.
- Surgical treatment: The skin is stitched with a very thin nylon thread and the scar is placed just below the eyelashes to minimize visibility.
- Duration: The surgery takes around 1-1½ hours.
- After surgery: Once the surgery is complete, you will rest for about 10 minutes with cooling goggles on and then you can go home. You are not allowed to drive yourself immediately after surgery, so it is important to arrange transportation.
After eyelid surgery
To promote healing and avoid complications:
- Cooling goggles: For the first 24 hours, it is recommended to use cooling goggles for 10-15 minutes at a time every few hours. If the wounds start oozing blood, you should rest with your head up and continue with the cooling goggles.
- Pain relief: After the local anesthesia wears off, you will only experience mild pain, which can be treated with Panodil (1 gram, 3-4 times daily). This is usually only needed for the first few days.
- Limit activities: In the first few days, avoid bending down so that your face is below heart level, as this can provoke bleeding.
Thread removal: After 5-7 days, you will have a check-up where the threads are removed and we check that everything is in order. The final check-up usually takes place after 3-6 months and can be scheduled at the time of surgery or later.
Although the surgery is safe, there are small risks:
- Bleeding: This is extremely rare. If it happens, rest with your head up and use cooling goggles. If the bleeding does not stop, it may be necessary to reopen the wound.
- Infection: Rarely, infection can occur, in which case antibiotic treatment is required. Symptoms of infection are redness, swelling and pain.
- Scar tissue shrinkage: In rare cases, scar tissue can contract and cause problems closing the eye. This typically goes away in a few months, but during this time it is necessary to keep the eye moisturized with ointment and eye drops. In very rare cases, this may require a second operation.
Sick Leave and Follow-Up:
- Sick leave: You may be off work for 1-2 days after surgery, but if your work is physically demanding, you may need up to 1 week.
- Follow-up: After checking and possibly removing threads, you can expect to follow up after a few months to make sure everything is healing properly.

How do you remove eye bags?
Eye bags can be treated with several methods depending on the cause. Simple home remedies include using cold compresses or eye creams that reduce the swelling. It’s a relatively simple procedure, but as with all surgeries, there is a risk of complications, so it’s important to consult an ophthalmologist.
Can you remove bags under the eyes without surgery?
