What does insurance typically cover?
- Eye doctor consultations: Most insurance policies cover the cost of consultations with an ophthalmologist, including general eye exams and assessment of eye diseases.
- Diagnostic tests: The insurance can cover a range of diagnostic tests, such as eye exams, eye scans, eye pressure measurement and examination for eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.
- Treatment and surgery: Typically does not cover vision-correcting procedures such as lens replacement or laser surgeries.
- Follow-up and aftercare: In some cases, the insurance also covers necessary follow-up visits and treatments after surgery or diagnostic procedures.
How does the coverage work?
- Direct billing: The patient must contact the insurance company before consultations or treatment. Ensure that the insurance company issues a payment guarantee. In these cases, payment is made directly between the clinic and the insurance company.
- Self-pay and reimbursement: In some cases, you will have to pay for the consultation or examination yourself and then get reimbursed by the insurance company.
- Consultations without referral: Most private health insurance plans do not require a referral from a general practitioner to cover eye doctor consultations. You can therefore choose to book an appointment directly with an ophthalmologist.
