Most private health insurance covers consultations
Most private health insurance plans in Denmark offer coverage or offer shared reimbursement of eye doctor consultations and examinations as part of their health plans. This applies to both general eye examinations as well as specialized treatments and surgery, depending on the insurance company and the specific insurance package.
What does insurance typically cover?
- Eye doctor consultations: Most insurance policies cover the cost of consultations with an ophthalmologist, including general eye exams and assessment of eye diseases.
- Diagnostic tests: The insurance can cover a range of diagnostic tests, such as eye exams, eye scans, eye pressure measurement and examination for eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration.
- Treatment and surgery: typically does not cover vision corrective surgeries such as lens replacement or laser surgery
- Follow-up and aftercare: In some cases, the insurance also covers necessary follow-up visits and treatments after surgery or diagnostic procedures.
How does the coverage work?
- Direct settlement: the patient must contact the insurance company before consultations or treatment. make sure that insurance companies issue a payment guarantee. in those cases, payment is made directly between the clinic and the insurance company.
- Self-pay and reimbursement: In some cases, you will have to pay for the consultation or examination yourself and then get reimbursed by the insurance company.
- Consultations without referral: Most private health insurance plans do not require a referral from a general practitioner to cover eye doctor consultations. You can therefore choose to book an appointment directly with an ophthalmologist.
