WHAT IS AN ADD-ON LENS IMPLANT

An add-on lens implant is a trifocal lens that is inserted in front of the primary lens that was implanted during a previous cataract surgery. Together, the two lenses create a so-called “soap lens system”, which gives you sharp vision at both long, medium and near distances and reduces the need for glasses.

This solution is especially suitable if you still experience vision problems after your cataract surgery, for example when reading. The add-on lens works a bit like an advanced lens add-on in a camera lens, where the perfect image is achieved by combining several elements, in this case lenses.

The treatment can be performed months and years after your cataract surgery, making it a flexible and gentle option for those who want to further optimize their vision.

TREATMENT OF REFRACTIVE ERRORS WITH ADD-ON LENS IMPLANT

The add-on lens is typically used to correct residual visual defects after a previous surgery, for example if the first lens did not give the desired result, or if you want to avoid reading glasses or bifocals altogether. The add-on implant is gently placed on top of the existing lens and does not affect your original vision surgery.

It is a reversible method, which means that the lens can later be removed or replaced if your vision needs change over time. The add-on solution is therefore both gentle and future-proof.

HOW IS AN ADD-ON LENS SURGERY PERFORMED?

Before the Add-on treatment
The process starts with a thorough preliminary examination with one of our specialist opticians. We measure all relevant parameters in your eyes and analyze your vision history to determine if the Add-on lens is the right solution for you. You will also have the opportunity to meet your personal patient coordinator who will guide you confidently through the entire process.

The treatment itself
The surgery is a quick and gentle procedure similar to the original cataract surgery. The treatment is outpatient, painless and lasts only a short time. The new lens is placed in front of your existing lens without affecting it, and vision is adjusted precisely to your needs.

AFTER THE ADD-ON LENS TREATMENT

You can expect a quick recovery, with many experiencing improved vision within hours of the procedure. For the first few days, there may be slight discomfort, such as a feeling of grit in the eye, but this is completely normal.

You will receive moisturizing eye drops and clear instructions on how to take good care of your eyes after surgery. It is important not to rub your eyes and to follow our recommendations carefully.

Most people can return to normal daily activities after 1-2 days, while intense physical activity should be postponed a little longer. At scheduled follow-up visits, we ensure that everything is healing as expected and that the lens is correctly positioned.

QUESTIONS REGARDING ADD-ON LENS IMPLANT

An add-on lens implant is an additional lens that is placed on top of an existing artificial lens inside the eye, typically after cataract surgery. It is used to fine-tune vision if correction is still needed and can be removed or replaced again if necessary.

An add-on lens implant usually lasts a lifetime, but it can be removed or replaced if vision changes or correction is needed later. The material itself is permanent.

Disadvantages of add-on lens implants can be slightly increased risk of inflammation, light sensitivity, halos around light sources and in rare cases irritation or need for adjustment. However, most people do not experience major discomfort.
