What are heavy eyelids

Droopy eyelids are a condition where the upper eyelid droops, which can make it difficult to open the eyes fully and affect vision. This condition can occur with age, but some people are born with droopy eyelids. In addition to the functional issues, droopy eyelids can also affect your appearance as they can give a tired or aged look.

How Is Heavy Eyelid Surgery Performed?

What does the surgery involve?

  • Purpose: The surgery aims to improve vision and create a cosmetic aesthetic result.
  • Procedure: During surgery, the muscle that lifts the eyelid is shortened. If there is excess skin, it is also removed. An incision is made in the skin and the wound is closed with a fine thread, leaving a small scar in the natural eye fold.
  • Symmetry: It is difficult to achieve 100% symmetry and there may be some difference in the level and shape of the eyelids.
  • Eyelid movement: Although the surgery can improve vision, the eyelid will not necessarily move with you when you look down, which can make it difficult to close the eye completely, for example when sleeping.
  • Long-term effect: The muscle structure that lifts the eyelid can lengthen over time, which means the eyelid can start to droop again. In such cases, a new operation may be necessary.

Before the surgery:

  • Blood thinners: If you are taking blood thinners or certain supplements, you may need to take a break before surgery. It is important to discuss with your surgeon how long the break should be.
  • Preparation: You should not fast before surgery, but be sure to wash your face thoroughly and remove all makeup on the day of surgery. You can be given a sedative tablet if you wish.

During the procedure:

  • Anesthesia: The surgery is performed under local anesthesia, so you will be awake but without pain.
  • Procedure: While lying on the operating table, the area will be cleaned and marked with marker. The local anesthetic will be administered with a thin needle and you may feel a brief stinging sensation. After this, you won’t feel any pain, but you may feel touch.

After heavy eyelids surgery

  • Normal discomfort: You may experience mild pain for the first few days, which can be relieved with Paracetamol. The skin may be swollen and discolored, and irritation and tearing may occur during the first few weeks. Light bleeding may occur, especially during the first 24 hours. If bleeding becomes heavy or does not stop, or if you experience reduced vision or double vision, contact us immediately.
  • Recommendations:
    • Rest: Stay at rest for the first day after surgery and avoid strenuous activity until the sutures are removed.
    • Lying up: For the first few days you should sleep with your head elevated to reduce swelling.
    • Avoid swimming pools and the sea: For the first week after the threads are removed, you should not go swimming or swimming in the sea.
    • Make-up and contact lenses: Avoid wearing make-up and contact lenses for the first 2-3 weeks after surgery.
    • Driving: Do not drive if you have only one eye functioning properly until both eyes are able to see clearly.
    • Smoking: Smoking slows healing and increases the risk of infection.

Postoperative Check-Up:

  • Thread removal: 7-10 days after surgery, you will have a check-up where the threads will be removed.
  • Control: If you experience complications such as heavy bleeding, increasing pain, or infection (pus formation and redness), contact us.
  • If you experience any other unexpected discomfort before the outpatient check-up, contact us, and after the check-up you can contact your GP.

As with any surgery, there is a risk of complications:

  • Asymmetry: It can be difficult to achieve complete symmetry between the eyelids.
  • Movement issues: Eyelid mobility cannot be fully improved, meaning the upper eyelid may not move naturally when you look down.
  • Long-term changes: The muscle that lifts the eyelid can stretch again, which can lead to droopy eyelids in the long run and further surgery may be necessary.

Questions Regarding Heavy Eyelid Surgery

The price for heavy eyelid surgery is 11,300 DKK per eye.

After eyelid surgery, most people will be able to return to work after 5-7 days, depending on how they heal. There may be some initial swelling and bruising, but most discomfort disappears quickly. If you’ve had major surgery or a more complex procedure, you may need to take up to 2 weeks off work.

You can get eyelid surgery covered if you have a documented skin excess of 3 mm that significantly limits your field of vision.
