Copenhagen Eye Institute Performs Denmark's First Privately Conducted Surgery for Corneal Intraepithelial Neoplasia

Written by Javier Cabrerizo

Copenhagen Eye Institute (CEI) has successfully performed a surgical excision for corneal intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) — marking, to our knowledge, the first time this procedure has been carried out at a private clinic in Denmark.

A Rare and Complex Condition

Corneal intraepithelial neoplasia is a rare, pre-cancerous condition affecting the surface tissue of the eye, most commonly at the corneal-conjunctival junction (the limbus). Left untreated, it can progress and become invasive. Because of its rarity and the surgical precision required to remove the lesion while preserving healthy ocular surface tissue, treatment is typically concentrated in a small number of highly specialised centres.

A Patient's Journey to CEI

The patient, who travelled from abroad, had already consulted several specialists before arriving at CEI. Their case illustrates a pattern we see increasingly often: patients seeking out anterior segment expertise are willing to travel across borders when they cannot find the right combination of surgical experience and diagnostic confidence closer to home.

Aligned with Our Clinical Vision

This case reflects a deliberate part of CEI’s long-term strategy: to establish the clinic as a highly specialised anterior segment centre, capable of managing not only routine refractive and cataract cases but also complex, low-incidence conditions of the cornea and ocular surface that require advanced surgical skill.
Performing this procedure successfully — and doing so as a private institution — demonstrates that this level of subspecialised anterior segment care is now available in Denmark outside the traditional university hospital setting.

Looking Ahead

CEI will continue to invest in the surgical expertise, diagnostic technology, and clinical protocols needed to manage complex anterior segment pathology, reinforcing our position as a destination for patients — both Danish and international — who require specialised eye care beyond standard treatment pathways.
