Wet AMD Treatment

What is anti VEGF treatment?
Anti-VEGF treatment is used for diseases of the retina of the eye where leaky blood vessels cause fluid and bleeding in the eye. This is seen, among other things, in:
- Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
- Diabetes in the eye
- Blood clot in the eye
- Varicose vein inflammation (inflammation)
These conditions are often caused by a signaling substance called VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), which causes blood vessels to leak fluid and blood.
The treatment consists of injections into the vitreous of the eye with medication that inhibits VEGF. This slows down fluid leakage and prevents further vision loss.
Purpose of Wet AMD treatment
The treatment does not cure the underlying disease, but it does cure it:
- Can prevent further vision loss
- Can improve vision in some cases
- Often requires repeated injections. Initially 3 at one month intervals, then as needed
How does anti VEGF treatment work?
VEGF treatment (anti-VEGF) is administered as an injection directly into the eye in the sterile environment of an ophthalmologist or eye department.
First, the eye is dripped with local anesthetic eye drops and the area around the eye is disinfected to prevent infection. Once the eye is numbed, a thin needle containing the medication is inserted into the vitreous (the jelly-like part in the center of the eye). The injection itself takes a few seconds and is usually almost painless. The treatment is performed lying down and lasts only a few minutes overall.
After anti VEGF treatment
After an anti-VEGF injection, you may experience mild and temporary discomfort in the eye. It is normal to experience:
- Slight discomfort or “gritty feeling” in the eye
- Redness on the white of the eye at the injection site
- A small black dot or spot in the visual field (from air bubble) for up to a few days
Vision may be slightly blurred for the rest of the day and it is recommended to take it easy. Most people can resume normal activities the following day.
Consult an ophthalmologist or seek emergency help if it occurs:
- Severe pain in the eye
- Sudden decrease in vision
- The eye becomes very red or pus appears
- Fever or general malaise associated with eye symptoms

Can wet AMD be cured?
Wet AMD (age-related macular degeneration) cannot be cured, but it can be treated and controlled.
