A solar eclipse is a marvellous natural phenomenon to witness &#8211; but it is also one of those days when we typically see more patients with retinal damage at the clinic. During a partial eclipse, the Moon covers only part of the Sun &#8211; the sky does not darken, and daylight remains largely as normal. The light hits the retina at the back of the eye, where it is converted into nerve signals that the brain interprets as images. It\u2019s a marvellous mechanism &#8211; but it isn\u2019t designed to withstand concentrated sunlight for more than a moment at a time. Normally, we automatically protect ourselves: we blink, squint and look away, because it\u2019s uncomfortable to look directly at the Sun.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"9\">The problem with a solar eclipse is that the Moon blocks out enough of the Sun\u2019s bright light to make the discomfort disappear &#8211; but the invisible radiation that damages the retina is still present. So there is no pain, no heat and no warning whilst the injury is occurring. Symptoms usually only appear 4\u201312 hours later &#8211; sometimes the following day.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t<section class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-69c89de e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-child\" data-id=\"69c89de\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74c2196 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"74c2196\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Symptoms of sun damage to the eye<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1e8acff elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1e8acff\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul><li data-path-to-node=\"14,0,0\">Blurred or impaired vision<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"14,1,0\">A dark or grey spot in the centre of the field of vision (scotoma)<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"14,2,0\">Distorted vision &#8211; straight lines appear bent or wavy<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"14,3,0\">Altered colour perception<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"14,4,0\">Increased sensitivity to light<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"14,5,0\">In rare, serious cases: a hole in the macula, which may require surgery<\/li><\/ul><p data-path-to-node=\"15\">Unfortunately, there is no treatment that can repair the damage. Some people experience a partial recovery within 3\u20136 months, but many are left with a permanent, small blind spot or distorted vision. The glasses must be marked with the ISO 12312-2 standard, which is specifically approved for direct observation of the Sun. Ordinary sunglasses &#8211; no matter how dark they are &#8211; do not provide sufficient protection and must never be used. Only buy glasses from well-known, reputable retailers; unfortunately, there are counterfeit \u2018ISO-marked\u2019 glasses in circulation that do not meet the standard. Always check the glasses for scratches or holes before using them &#8211; if there is any damage, they must be discarded.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"18,1,0\">Build a pinhole projector<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"18,1,1\">A completely safe and child-friendly method: make a small hole in a piece of card and let the sunlight pass through the hole onto another piece of paper or card.
